Shifter Boot on a T-5 upgrade
I upgraded my old toploader to a T-5 last winter. Now I can't seem to find a boot that will cover the hurst shifter I bought for it and still utilize the stock screw locations. Anybody who has done this upgrade, got any suggestions? Thanks
A long, long time ago, in a Galaxy far, far away, actually Massachusetts but still a ling time ago, I had the same problem - twice. I reused the old boots with the round hole on the rectangular shaft of the Hurst I put in. They more or less fix poorly. I just lived with it.

The problem is that the Hurst is so big, the round part below where the handle attaches sticks throught the shifter hole and the boot will not fit around it.
Do you sew, or is there a seamstress shop in your town? You may have to have a custom boot made out of leather. I think that would look really cool to have one side of the boot split, and laced up with a leather strap like a leather shoe string. It would be unusual forsure. You could cut the old boot off and just use the base forconnecting the bottom of the new leather boot. Monkey glue anda good sewing machine is all you need.
Hmmmm, I never had a problem getting the stock boot to fit with a T-5 Hurst shifter and stock looking T-5 compatible shifter handle. If you absolutely cannot get that to work you can try using a 69/70 rubber boot which is about (if not the same) width but about 50% longer. You'd have to drill at least two new holes for that shifter but it wouldlook somewhat period correct.
FWIW, Mustangs Plus lists a leather shift boot for all early years in their catalog.

Go to a 'foreign' car parts supplier and get an imitation (or real) leather boot, cut off the top of the rubber one, cut off the bottom of the leather one - attach together. The best of both worlds.
