Default Carb Value Question

Should the butterfly valve on the carbuerator move at all when the engine is revved. Know nothing about this and my 65 Coupe has been idling and running rough. Took off the air filter to check the carb (per a tip someone else on the forum gave me). Thevalve does not move when I gas it. Thoughts?

The butterfly is related to your choking system. If the engine is cold, and you depress the gas pedal a few times, the butterly should be completely closed. If it isn't, then your choke mechanism is toast. When the engine gets totally warmed up, the butterfly will stay open all the way if it is set up correctly. Now, you may be talking about your secondaries if you have a four barrel carb. So, what carburetor do you have.

It's a four barrel. Not sure of the make. I started it today after about three days of sitting. Fired right up. Drove OK.

If you're talking about the choke plate (on top of the carb), it should be vertical when warmed up. If you're talking about the secondary throttle plates, you won't be able to make them move unless you have a mechanical secondary carb. You actually have to drive a vacuum 4v to get the secondaries to open.

That answers it. It is the choke plate, and it is up. So, have to look for another cause to the problem...

Might be trash in the carb, might need a tuning. Has the fuel filter been replaced?

Have had the carb adjusted twice. When I got it, the carb was running really rich and idling way too high. Fuel filter was recently replaced. Here's the skinny: Fired her up a week ago and made it about a block from my house when it died. Started up fine, but would continue to kill if I gave it any measurable amount of gas. And it idled like someone was jumping up and down on the hood. Nice...
