Default 64.5 302??

I thought the biggest engine a 64.5-66 mustang could hold with out major mods was the 289. now I'm hearing people putting in a 351C..... Can I put a 302 into mine and what do I have to wach out for (clearance/other problems)??

Yeah, you can put a 289 or a 302 in it.

I thought the 289 and 302 had the same heads, or close to the same head?

289 302 and 351w all use the same heads...289 and 302 are externally the same.

289/302/351 are all Windsor family engines and the heads are basically the same(289/302 uses a 7/16" head bolt and 351 uses a 1/2" head bolt though). The only differences are performance, which is based on valve/port sizes mostly

About the biggest thing I've seen commonly used in 1st gen cars is a 408ci smallblock. Typically a stroked 351W.

Trying to fit any Ford V8 engine other than a Windsorin a 65/66 requires shock tower modification
