Default What would you do if this was your car?

Problem. My seats in my car are original from the factory and I wanted to keep them that way but my driver's side back rest had a few rips in the horizontal folding (the weave material). So, for my wedding present my wife said that she would fix my interior. I then did the research. I called 5 local places (within 40 minutes from me). All of them except for one were telling me that I would have to replace the covers. Only one of my seats had damage and if I just replace the front two I was told that I would probably see a difference between the back seat and the front. The set would cost me around 400 plus install around another 400. The new vinyl is also a lighter weight that will crack easier over time. One upholstry guy told me that he could repair the weave and get the new material (which cost $170 a yard). I must have asked him 5x if he could make it look just like the passenger seat and I wouldn't be able to tell. He assured me (actually got annoyed that I asked the same question so much) that he could do it. I went to go pick up the car and he wasn't there. I did a quick glance of the back rest and it looked ... good. It didn't have the downward fold that the other seat did, but it wasn't that noticeable. I then saw the bottom part of the seat and that was noticeably different from teh passener seat. The folds were nearly as high and the padding really didn't have the bucket seat look. I had to take the car home because i was dropped off so, I called him up and complained and he told me to bring it back and he'll fix it. When I called to confirm that I was dropping it off he asked me what was wrong and then tried to pull the well it won't be perfect blah blah, and I told him that it was too noticeable of a differance and it really just envolves more material to increase the fold size and maybe rework the padding. Now I'm at a loss of what to do if he can't fix it to look like the passenger seat. He dyed the seats to bring back the original black and that looks great so, I'm wondering if I should just replace the two front seat covers now and ask him to do that for the cost of the seats since he originally told me I won't notice the difference. This isn't my daily driver, but I don't want it to be a trailer queen. The car's in really good shape and I plan on taking it to shows to hopefully take home some trophy's.

get some pics of the seat,

how bad is it? i mean, you have to realize that it would be next to impossible to get it exactly matched

I would've bought the new seat covers, foam, burlap, etc. all the way around and taken the wife up on her offer to recover them for you. '70 Mach 1 covers are about $300 for the set. Figure another $100 for the foam and hog rings and pliers and you're good to go. They will all match and be more comfortable. I'd chalk it up to a lesson learned and wouldn't give the guy another buck.

Good luck!

If it was my car, I would replace the covers.

Just replace the fronts as said above and be done with it. Consider it a lesson learned.

For the record, I suggest replacing the rear while you're at it.

Replace front and rear. Do it right the first time (or in your case, the second time) and forget it.

Pictures will be up sometime tommorrow. The guy who's doing it is a judge at car shows and he judges upholstery and he told me he would judge it on this and not deduct, but ofcourse he could just be saying that. I'll send you guys the pics and then you can be the judge if you think I'm in the wrong or he is?

I think it's hopeless, put it out of it's misery and send it on down to Houston to me. I'll dispose of it properly, I swear!

UPDATE- so, I did some more research on what other seats look like from pics of mustangs online. The new seat covers do not look as good as the originals, but I did notice they were flatter and didn't have a lip in the front of the bottom of the seat. So, I realized that it was my seat's padding that went causing it to lift. I really liked the lift effect, but it was just too much of a difference between the two seats- new and worn. So, I had him do the passenger seat. 150 bucks later they both match and look great. I don't know why he didn't just suggest that to begin with. Oh and go figure he wasn't there when I showed up to pick up the car. I was going to say thanks but he was probably worried I still wouldn't like it. When it's your baby you expect nothing but the best.
