Default Engine swaps

I have seen lots of people swap from the 289 and the inline 6 to 302, 351w, 351c

Has anyone dropped in a more modern engine? from a more modern mustang? Anyone put a turbo charged 4 cylinder in?
I am thinking of purchasing a nice straight rolling chassis and put a modern engine in it. I want to daily driver the car so i need a super reliable engine. On top of that, i would really like to get goood gas mileage. I knoew people would hate me for it, but a turboed 4 or 6 cylinder would be fun.

What are some swaps you have seen other than the typically stuff i listed? I am curious about the amount of custom fabrication involved. I can do many things myself but i wouldn't want to dig myself too deep of a hole.

by the way. HELLO ALL, ive aonly been reading on the boards this is my first post.

Most of the Turbo4 & 6 swaps cost as much or more than an EFI 5.0, and are much more challenging. So if you want to be a ground breaker & not see another one like yours at the local show, Go for it!
I'm very satisfied with my EFI 5.0, its capable of 13's in the 1/4 & can get 28+ mpg. Hows that??

First off..Welcome!
How modern an engine you thinking? How about early 90s 5.0?

Would it be possible for you to post some information on your engine. Are you getting 28mpg combination or is that a highway figure? Id like to see 25mpg city but it seem unrealistic even for todays cars. I would definately consider that engine setup. One reason i was referring to a swap: I thought it would be less expensive to buy an engine and ecu that are already in a car rather than buying an EFI kit or an aftermarket setup. Id be interested in an reliable EFI kit, especially a 5.0that gets 28mpg. What trnasmission, how many speed? What is your final drive ratio?

James W: Thanks for the welcoming comment. I actually owned a 89 LX when i was 17, it wasn't a good daily driver because the previous owner had built that car for drag racing purposes. Also being young it was not the best bet.

But now, a 90's 5.0 wouldn't be a bad bet.

Im trying to get some pricing figures together because i have a fmaily member with a balance and blue print 5.0 with a supercharger kit on it. The engine and trans are currently in a 94 mustang but one concern is the reliability of that engine and the fuel figures. I think a 13's EFI daily driver with air conditiong would make me one happy camper

Just stay away from the new Modular engine family unless you like burning a gigantic freakin hole in your pocket. The 4.6/5.4's can make power, but $ for $ you can get the same power and mileage out of a 5.0 for WAAAAYYYY less moneythan a Modular. And they're wide, so you'll need to do some chopping, and try to find headers(though most likely you'd need to get them made).A super/turbo charged 5.0 will get decent mileage and make excellent power, and as long as it's tuned properly and it's not producing excessive amounts of power, it'll be plenty reliable. You could easily build an 11 second daily driver that's reliable with a 5.0 and a blower, 12's can be done without a blower

the early mustangs any small block will fit the 67-73 a big block fits. theres the mod motor which is more of a look at me it cost alot to do same way would be if you used a turbo 2.3 or build up a inline 6. honestly ford small block is your best bang for your buck. id run a stroked 460 over a mod motor anyday.

So how much would an EFI 302 engine cost? Would i run a t56 trans or what?
I guess i can worry about the trans later. I would like to get AT least 20mpg in the city preferably 25. anyone other opinions on the efi 302 getting good gas mileage?

Well,I dunno about getting 20 in the city, especially with a performance engine. A T56 is nice, but they're rather flimsy unless you get the blueprinted versions from the Vipers etc, but I never did like their gear ratios. Tremec makes some nice 5 speeds, the TKO 500 or 600 are very sturdy with good gear ratios. With a 5.0 and EFI with a 5spd you can get decent mileage. I can get over 20 on the highway if I drive easyand that's with a carburetor and no overdrive
