I noticed this problem on mine and will be tackling it in the future. I found a rebuild kit for the steering box which may be what u need. I read that over time the pieces in the box wear down and you either rebuld it or buy a new one. Heres the link to a few rebuild kits.

I can't imagine how the steering box would affect range....doesn't it continue to rotate if the pitman arm is not connected?

The first thing I would do would be to get the front end aligned. I'd also check the tie rod ends carefully to make sure that one of the rods hasn't been bent. Now, as far as the steering box, you can ajust those. It's a long process, but basically you just unscrew the adjusting screw, by first loosening the locking nut, and turn it clockwise until it just rubs, then reset the locking nut. The last thing I would do would be to replace the steering box unless the car has about a million miles on it.

I misread the post I thought you meant to much free play in your steering. I read an article a while back that said to eliminate the free play you need to rebuild or replace the steering box. Sorry about that.

Could it be your pitman arm in the wrong place? Just a guess.

Joe, Carolton Jawjah is a bit off my beaten path. Sounds like you need a new box.

The old box will get worse and the new box price will go up...good steering is worth it.
