Question about Black Plates
I bought a car and it came with a California black plate. The guy tells me that he drives the car like that. I know every state has different rules. He tell me I can drive the car in my state like that too. I thought he was lying to me so I didn't even ask him anymore questions. Do anyone know what are the procedures for me to drive with those plate legally? I've seen black California plates but only in pictures. What i'm I supposed to tell DMV? please I need some help.
You're worrying about nothing. I'm driving in California with my original black plates. The color scheme of the plate just has to do with the year that they were issued. California changed the plate schemes every so often, it's just a cosmetic thing, and a black plate is no more or less legal than a blue/gold or a white/blue
Personally I think the black plates look better than any of the newer plates, I drive mine with the black plates and have never had an issue concerning it. Only thing is I need to get my plates "refurbished" because the front plate is pretty torn up from rocks and other things pelting it over the years, and the rear is just not as I would like it. Only thing I can think of concerning the DMV is just registering the car.
If you are still in CA, not a problem if the plates are still legible. Just tell the DMV you want to operate the car with those Black plates. (and insist on them allowing you to do so)If not in CA, it's up to the locals butI doubt, they'le let you keep out of state plates on a vehicle registered for daily driving.
I've got Cali Black plates and I guarantee they are 100% LEGAL. See my pic...
Don't worry about a thing. Just get to the DMV and get the title paperwork taken care of and make sure you have current tabs. If I were you I would put some sort of locking bolts on your plates because people will steal the black plates. They are somewhat rare these days and if your old black plates get jacked, the DMV will be issuing you shiny reflective white plates with a brand new plate #. And that sucks.
Black plates are the S*** so wear them with pride.
BTW, if you want to spend a little $ (maybe 50-70/plate?), you can send your plates to professional restorers... do a google search... but personally I am an artist and "restored" my plates with my own paint and brushes. Unless you get up REALLY close, you cant tell at all that my plates have a fresh coat of paint.

It seems like common sense that you cannot register a car in one state with the license plates from another state... I guess if I had read the original posting just a little more carefully, I would have realized that it was implied that he is in another state (NY). I just assumed he was in Cali.
If I want to register my car with NY plates, can I do that in California??? If you pay the DMV employee enough under the table, anything is possible. Personally, I think my Mustang would not look very good with NY plates
