1965 Fasback value
My father in law and I are looking at a 1965 fastback. It has had a restoration but is original. No rust anywhere original floor pans and all. It is a local car and has a two owner history. Color is poppy red with black int. It has a base model two barrel carb 289 v8 and 3spd man. tranny. Both were rebuilt a few years ago. Odometer shows around 54,000 which might be original by looking at the rest of the car, but then again, it may not be. I've looked the car over and under and can't find anything that jumps out as a problem. What are some hidden things I might look for? I have a '68 convertible so I feel I have pretty good knowlege of problem areas but if you can think of something I might have missed, let me know.
Also, what would you feel to be a fair price it? I've done the NADA and such and have some ideas but how close are they to real world pricing.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Sounds like you found one worth serious consideration. You checked off rust, which being a northern local car would by my #1 focus.
Did you give you a price?

He's at $26,500, which by looking at some cars is a bargain and others, isn't. Is this in line. Its not a trailer queen only car nor is it one you are going to want to drive on gravel. Its about as nice a car as I've seen that you can still feel half way comfortable driving on the weekends. The fact that its a northern car with original floor pans and all is partly why I feel the miles could be actual. Thoughts or coments?
Being a Vert owner you prolly have a very good idea on areas to check. And the seller isnt way out of line, for a truely solid car. Hopefully his weak spot is much lower, some times money can be a great pursuader.
If I had to buy a 2+2 now, I'd never be able to afford one.
Good luck if you chose to negotiate

That price doesn't sound way high. Nor does it sound way cheap.
I wouldn't get too caught upon the odometer. On a car like that there shouldn't be much difference between 50k and 150k due to the fact that all the wear parts are 40+ years old either way. So the miles will play only a small part on how much has needed to be replaced/restored or not. If it was a 429Boss or Shelby then the low miles may flat out give it more value, but IMO they made enough 65s (even fastbacks) that they aren't rare enough to worry about the odometer.

sounds high for a non-GT fastback to me.
From the description it sounds more like a $20K car to me.
But, if that's the current market for a plain jane, V8, stickfastback looks like there some money to be made buying and selling them.

"Cars with Class" in Santa Monica, CA has an okay '65 vert in PoppyRedfor $39,500 and a blue '66 fastback in need of lots of work for 35,000. That said, I have no doubt they will get(or get close to)their asking price for both cars.
By the way, the 65/66 fastback prices have beem going through the roof here in LA. $20,000 gets you a decent rust-free platform from which you can easily add on another20 to 40 grand for an A level resotation.
