65 overheats
I just put a new thermostat and a water pump on. It takes about 10 minutes sitting to start to overheat. I just got the thing also. I do not see the water going around in the radeator. Budy said if it is shooting out of the radeator the the heads where put on backwards but it is not. I am lost. I have no idea. The water is going out my over flow hose too. Should I put something on there to catch that or let it go.

If the water's not circulating the thermostat isn't functioning for some reason.
Do you have a 3 core radiator? That solved ALL my 100 degree-day overheating problems.
good luck, wish I could help more

How's your radiator? Was the coolant rusty when you drained it? Is your cap ok? Replace it if you haven't in a while. As doc said, if you don't have one already, consider a 3-row radiator.
Also...did you bleed all of the air out of the system?

if the water isnt moving then the first thing i would think is the thermostat isnt working and since you just replaced it, are you sure you didnt put it in backwards
as far as what your buddy said i think he is talking about if you put the gaskets on backwards or i should say one of the gaskets ...
i could be wrong but i dont believe you could put the heads on backwards i thought both heads were identical, its just the gaskets that allow the water to flow correctly.
but if the thermostat is in correct, the next thing i would look at is the radiator and see if you see rust bits in the holes cuz that will hinder the flow of the water and cause overheating .... check those... and lets us know

You won't see water moving until the engine heats up enough for the thermostat to open. Did you put a 180 thermostat in?
Same question as bobby... did you put the thermostat in correctly? with the temp bulb facing the motor?

I put a 160 in and with the engine running hot i still don't see the water going through. It had a 180 in it and it looked pretty good when I took it out. I know this question but I want to make sure spring of the thermostat goes toward the engine right?
The radiator does have a hole in it. I just found it last night. It is a good size hole about a pencil size toward the very top. Would that really be the reason it would over heat. The temp gauge stays at H. Sucky thing not sure if it works or not. I got a great deal on the car I just need to kick this heatting issue in the butt.
Also put a new cap on the radiator. I am burning oil to not a lot but some it doesn't smoke so I was thinking it is from where the car runs hot all the time. I do notdrive it as of right now until i figure this out.

Yes..the pointy end points to the upper hose and the square end with the spring points to the motor. Do you have the radiator topped off with water? You won't see it moving until the tstat opens.
You need to verify that your tstat and new waterpump are both working properly. I'd pull the tstat out and put the waterneck back out without one...fill it up and run it to see if the water pump is moving the water. If it is, get another tstat. If not, then you've either got a blockage or a bad pump.
It could be your radiator is plugged and it's not letting the water flow to the pump.

Get you a 3 row radiator , and you more than likely need to move your closer to the engine , away from the radiator , so that it gets more air . I was haveing the same problem until I did that now it runs cool and does'nt get hot any more
james is right the hole in the radaitor is a problem the coolant system cant hold pressure so it can overheat easy depending your altitude higher up the lower temp water boils at thats why the coolant system has pressure to raise the boiling temp.if your burning oil your valve seals are leaking or the head gaskets are blown. could try changing the temp gauge sending unit/sensor whatever you call it could be bad. theres alot of what ifs you need to narrow them down a much as youcan good luck hope you get it fixed.also you want to get a over flow tank they are cheap and work great.
