Default Original or Not?

I have a 1973 mustang grande, it's operable and everything seems original except one question. In my research of the 73 grande's the 302 V8 had an automatic transmission. Mine has a 3 speed w/reverse. Just curious if this could be anoriginal or a special order. What would my vehicle be worth. It needs work but runs good. Body has some rust, trunk is rusted about 50 percent. I'm wondering if it is worth putting the bucks in this model?

decode the data plate. even if the trans was added the information on the plate will reflect the correct original transmission. As far as "worth sinking money in to" do you like the car? would you be happy with it if it were fixed? if yes than have fun

You could only get the 302 in 2 barrel formin 1973.The 5th digit in the VIN will be an "F". Youcould get it with 3 speed automatic, 3 speed manual or 4 speed manual trans. As far as what's it worth ? Who knows. Not really rare as a 3 speed but uncommon. If you like it and it makes you happy... build it.

i dont think grande's will be worth much for a while...proubly not worth it unless its like 1 of 50 made...grande's never bring as much as you put into them..its best to find the same year of mach 1 and dump money and be worth it when your done....unless you just love the car and dont care about money... all counts on what you wanna do

nice car rsrxion..i see ya got cobra mag like mine too got a 351 cj?

The 3-speed manual was the base transmission. The auto and 4-speeds were optional.

The Grande is a rare package, though it isn't really desirable.

Thanks Hyena for the props. Yep, it's a "Q" code 351 with a 4 speed. The wheels are the original wheels that came on the car. I did buy an extra one at a swap meet for the spare so they'd all match.

With respect to the Grande package... I agree that they are somewhat less desirable. The upside of that is that they are also less common.Believe it or not I purchased a 73 Grande parts car several years ago. It was a Q code car that had just undergone a recent restoration. The car had less than 100 miles on its' restorationwhen it was rear ended by a truck. It was toast.

Hey All,
Thanks for your comments to this point. This is the most information I have received about my stang! I'm glad I found this website. I recently had dual exhaust put in. Sounds and acts mean...anyway, my new issue is I cannot keep a charge. It continues to run off the battery, i changed the alternator, regulator, cables, etc. When i press the break the lights die down, definitely electrical. Any other suggestions?I wanna cruise before winter! Thanks again!

Sounds to me like a dead cell in the battery. It is fairly common for one of the lead plates to break free inside the battery and while it may test good, it is in fact failing. If the battery has such a low charge that brake lights will dim the headlights even with the alternator making adequate charge... I'll bet the battery is bad. You might also check the little things like a glove box light staying on, starter arcing and drawing the battery down etc ... Good luck and remember, she's a 34 year old car. With more than three decades of use behind her, she's going to have her own little quirks. Women are no different
