Default SMOKE FROM STARTER

While trying to bump the starter, to setup the distributer and get it timed correctly, my starter started let out some smoke after the 2nd small bump....diagnose?

Only thing I can see that changed was I replaced the wire running power to the starter with a bigger wire, as was suggested to me.

Did you reach down there to see if the cable or the starter was hot?

The negative cable coming from the battery was veryyyy hot and I believe it was smoking from there...My dad had hooked it up on the block assuming it went there but the cable is very long and I'm thinking it went to the frame or firewall any thoughts?...some help would be appriciated we're at a stand still.

Nope..the neg cable does bolt to the block. Have you had any trouble with this starter?

Starters use a ****load of current. They can pull several hundred amps while turning over your engine. It is important that all crimped connections have been done correctly (using vice grips is a no-no), you may be able to borrow a good crimping tool from a place that does high end stereos, or from an electrician. You should also use #2 or larger wire, and make sure that all bolted connections are clean. Most of the connectors sold over the parts counters these days are crap, often thin, not tinned, and are not designed to be used with a specific crimping tool. Double check all of your connections and make sure that you have a large cable running from the negitive post on your battery to your engine block, and then jumped to your chassis.

Brady and Thomas & Betts are two good name brands.
