odd question for you guys
Ok the other day i went to pick up some parts in my car and a couple people were looking at it. I was telling them some of the things i have done to it and when i said it had a cam one of the older guys asked if it was a 3/4 cam.I replied with ................umm..................huh? He told me he had an old 67 mustang that hes been working on so im not sure if this an older term because i have never heard of a 3/4 cam. I asked this in the general tech section and nobody knew and someone suggested to ask here. This was the only time someone had asked me something about my car that i had no clue what they were talking about thanks in advance for any info
It's an old term that really doesn't tell you all that much. Crower's definition reads something like
Lift, duration at 0.050", and cam mfr recommended rev ranges are far more useful, and general understanding of those terms is much more widespread now than they would have beenback before about themid 60's. Today, there is a much wider variety of available cam specs at least for certain engine families, so general descriptions are no longer sufficient. Even by the late 60's, the SBC and SBF had many listings in the Crane catalog (I may still have a copy). Four basic types of lifters now, instead of just the two that had any performance intent "back in the day".

These cams are designed for a vehicle that sees limited street use and has a rough idle.

just kidding

Next time someone asks if you have a 3/4 or better yet a RV cam in there say "yup and it was a pain to put in I had to remove the knutsen valves to clear the lift"
