4 speed toploader
ok so ever since i bought my 347 stroker, ive been trying to figure out what to do with my transmission. its a C4 and it wont last very long with a 347 bolted to it. i was pricing up how much the t5 swap would be and it was to much. now i found a cheap 4 speed toploader and want to know how hard will the swap be form auto C4 to the toploader. its just the trans, so ill need to get bellhousing, clutch, flywheel, clutch pedal assembly and cable, new driveshaft? transmission crossmemeber. what else am i missing, speedo cable? anyone done this before
Pilot bushing/bearing (may not be installed on an automatic transmission car, there may be more than one available size)
Not sure about front U-joint size/spline count or driveshaft length
Cable and Z-bar clutch linkages work differently, and the Classics used the Z-bar.

You can compare this to the cost of a C4.
I bought my toploader for $450. You'll need a clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, clutch fork, boot for the clutch fork, roller pilot bearing. That's just for starters. Next you need to decide whether or not you want to go with the factory linkage. A cable is most likey out of the question. If you do, you'll need a gamet of parts found on e-bay. The z-bar and all the linkage will probably run you around $80-$100. The clutch pedal assy can be purchased on e-bay for around $200-$250. If you get lucky, maybe you can find a 3 or 4 speed car in the wrecking yard. Then you can probably cut your cost in half or better. I chose to go with a hydraulic clutch. In my opinion, this is the best way to go. The 3/4 master cylinder, braided hose, slave cylinder, and push rod can be had for under $200 with shipping. If you go this route you must fabricate a bracket to mount to the side of the trans or bellhousing for the slave. I personally have always wanted to bang gears in my mustangs but couldn't since I always had C4's. I really wanted this and the cost was not important to me. So, do you really want to have fun or do you want to talk on the cell phone and drink a Latt'e at the same time. You make the choice. Good luck in whatever you choose.
