Default Compression Test Questions

My compresson test just revealed the following when I ran a compresson test.

Cylinder one was 135-140 psi and the others were all between 150 and 155 psi. The engine is a 68 fairlane code 302 with 65 289 heads, performer rpm intake, and holley 650 VS.

What do the results from the compression test mean and where do I go from here? I'm thinking T-5, and I would like more power, but I really don't think I need more then 350 hp in this car. That 347 stoker from T and L is pretty tmepting though...

What are my options and what is the approximate cost?

Compression test realy doesnt mean much except that the cylinders are sealing. The numbers will vary depending on the cam timing. It just means that one cylinder isnt sealing as good as the rest. A little oil squirted in thru the spark plug hole will tell you if it's the rings. A leak down test is better, but a compression test has very little to do the HP other than telling you if the rings are worn.

As Gary said a compression test doesn't really tell you much. However, all cylinders should be within 10% of each other. Run a dry compression test, then run a wet test (oil) and see if the results change...This would tell you if the problem is in the rings or the heads. A leak down test should follow if you have the tool. Then look at how many miles are on the engine, does it smoke? What's the color? Blue, black? Looks like you have a 64-66 mustang. If you are going to go to a larger block make sure to beef up the front suspension for the added weight and torque of the motor.

Besides the difference between the number one and the rest of the cylinders, that looks to be good compression. Hopefully it's a head problem, such as seals, or a improperly seating valve.
