you really need to tell us what year mustang you have. 64-66 could not take as large of wheels as the 67+.
As far as the diameter of the rims- no, it is not just for looks. The bigger the rim will improve handling because it'll leave the tire with a smaller sidewall. Remember, the tire will flex on a turn, where as the rim won't. Thus less sidewall is more stable.It'll also make for a stiffer/rougher ride.Meanwhile, if you're looking for strait-line traction, the bigger sidewall will actually help get traction from a start.

I do know that with 17s I can fit some pretty beefy brakes on my car that I couldn't fit with 15s I would hate to think that I've somehow screwed it up so much that the big beefy brakes actually are somehow substandard to the stock 4 wheel drums that fit under a 13 inch rim.

When I went from my 15s to 17s my car got a lot faster...might have something to do with more traction since I can fit a wider tire on the car in 17s than I can in 15s. If you oversize your tire sure you can impact total performance but oversizing the tire is the width and height of the tire not the rim

BTW - The sig below shows my 17x8....neither of these "jack it up and stick them out the sides and look like ghetto crap" seem like a valid description to me since the car is lowered, they fit under the sheetmetal with the only mod being that I rolled the lip in the rear slightly because I run a 255 40 17 in the rear...if I went with a matching tire to the front (245 40 17) I would not have had to roll the rear lips.
Alright I am almost positive that i have decided to go with Bullitt Replicas (chrome) from American Muscle 17x8 in the front and 18x9 in the rear both with sumitomo tires. I thnk u guys a ton for the input.

I know it is a moot point, but you don't have to put a 235 45 17 on a 17. There are plenty of larger tires out there...most won't fit on a mustang but they do exist
