Default Driveshaft measuring???

I just put in an AOD Tranny and a new posi third member in my 65 and I need to shorten my driveshaft. The problem is I dont know where to measure my driveshaft from. Do I measure from yoke to yoke in the center of the u joints or where the yoke starts? Thanks

How did you make a Chevy third member fit in your Ford posi would be Chevy trac-lock would be Ford Ok enough being difficult. The important thing about where to measure from is being consistent. If you measure from center eye to center eye then the drive shaft shop needs to do the same. Or if you are simply telling the machine shop to remove X inches than make sure you are constant on the original measurement and the new measurement to derive X. Make sure you measure the space you need to fill rather than simply having the drive shaft shortened to a # some one else told you they used. I have found that depending on the car, the same application may have as much as 1" variance. In other words two 65 mustangs with T5s may need different amounts taken from the drive shaft. Also make sure you have at least .75" between the base of the yoke and the end of the trans, but no more than 1.5"

Call the shop you intend to use to shorten the shaft and ask them. The place I use wants the measurement from the end of the transmission output shaft to the flat (where the straps bolt down) of the differential yoke.

Most driveshaft shops, all that I have experience with, will prefer a measurement from the front yoke centerline to the back yoke centerline.

The yoke centerline is defined as the center of the u-joint cup.

This measurement is helpfullin casedriveshaft shop screws up. If this were the case you will have an exact dimension that you gave theshop, and there will be no doubt as to who make the mistake.

I have done the 2" off thing before, and after failing to make initial measurements, what I got is what I got, even if it did not fit the way I wanted... [:@]

I have an AOD in 65 and found a different yolk so I did not need to shorten the driveshaft. The yolk was out of an 83 Thunderbird with a 302.
