Default Registering in Massachusetts

Hi, I'm facing a tuff situation. I bought a car from someone and that person doesn't have a copy of the previous registration. I need a bill of sale which he told me to just write one up with his name. I called the DMV of massachusetts because that's where I plan to register the car and they told me that I can't register it unless I have that document. What can I do? I'm stuck now. This car was delivered from another state and I don't know what to do.

What does that have to do with insurance?

If I were you, I'd change the title of the post to "Registering in Mass."

Have the seller send you a signed bill of sale (or "find" the original one) and go to your insurance agent. Gotta have it.

Yes they are, no emissions testing only safety, and everything on the car has to work (for example the windshield washers.)

I've got 3 classics registered in Mass and it's a real uh pain in the butt.

If you don't have a title and the car is over 15 years old, you need a bill of sale and a copy of the last registration. Without it, they will not do a damned thing. Does the seller not have a title to give you? I registered my Mustang with the old title and a bill of sale, no previous registration. But you need one or the other.

I had my Firebird inspected this week and even though they don't put in through emissions, the guy insisted on knowing how many liters my engine is, claiming the state "had" to know. He could not get the hood open to check the engine but finally looked it up (and was incorrect, too).
