Default Engine Rebuild

I have a 1967 code c Mustang convertable with the original engine. It currently has 157,000 miles on it. I am planning on rebuilding the engine this winter so I am open to any suggestions you may recommend from your own personal experience. I'm currenly planning on changing the carb from the existing 2 to a 4 barrel. Suggested vendors? I am also planning on changing the cam shaft. Any recommendations, 1/2 or 3/4 race? Suggestions for the bottom half of the engine block?

Also what are the benefits of adding headers?

I know this is a lot of questions but I want to get as much data as possible before I get started.

Thanks,

Fred

Fred,
First off,, welcome, and second,, what do you have in the car now?? Tranny?? What do you plan on doing with the car? Daily driver, or a mean street/track machine??How mechanically inclined are you (what are you willing to do yourself) .. And what is your budget like?? Get those questions answered and you will get lots and lots of opinions on what you should put in your baby..

Stick around for a while, this forum is a great place for gear heads.. Ive only been around for about 6 months and have gained soooo much knowledge about my car that I feel very confident to take on any task with this website and its members on my side..

Let us know what you want to do to that puppy..

Build yourself a 302 longblock based on the 87-up roller cam block. It would be more cost effective and run better than a 289.
The swap is simple but the are some things that need to change.

agree on the roller block and one piece rear main seal, but using the 289 crank and rods kicks the crap outta using a 302 with their goofy little 5.090 rods[:'(]

I have longer rods than a 289 in my 302 [8D]And yeah, that 5.09 rod is just lame. 1.6" comppression height pistons? What was Ford thinking? The 351W's are the same, a 3.5" stroke with like a 5.956 rod on a 9.5 deck height? [:'(]Lame. I think Ford has some of the heaviest factory pistons for a small block. It wouldn't be so bad of the deck heights were shorter

It currently has the original 3 speed automatic. I will not be doing much of the work, however I have a great mechanic that is reliable. Will be a daily driver so to speak, not rebuilding it for the strip or the track but as we all like I want a lot more than the 200 hp it currently has. I will be also upgrading the suspension next spring, engine first though. Budget is $2,000 to $3,000 for the engine.

Why not build it for the track? You can still drive it every day, just build a healthy street car

^+1. I rebuilt my 351W when I got it. Basically I stripped it down, and put in parts that would help keep it lasting and inrease some horses:

Mild Cam
Flat Head Pistons
Bored to .040
Procomp Dizzy with Accel Wires
Edelbrock Performer Intake
Edlebrcok 600 Carb
K&N XStream Filter
Roller Rockers
Hooker Long Tube Headers

Wasnt really to pricy either, I think the internals came to 350 for pistons, timing gear/chain, lifters, cam, oil pump and driveshaft, and all the seals/gaskets. Another ~300 for the headers from Jeg's. 180 to have the block dipped, bored, cam bearings, and piston-rod mating. Like 160 for the intake manifold, 150 for the carb, 90 for the dizzy, 45 for the wires, and like 250 for the rockers (maybe, dont remember that one). The tranny was the bitch. 2K for the T5 and like 425 for the driveshaft.
