power steering - major problem
My car is almost road ready (supposed to be the getaway car for my wedding this week-end) and ran into a problem with the power steering when we were testing everything out last night - fortunately the car was still on jackstands and not on the road. Started the car and the wheels sit perfect as long as you don't touch the steering wheel. When you try to turn the steering wheel one way, the power steering wants to force it the opposite way. That is if you start to turn the wheel to the right, the slave cylinder forces the wheel to the left stop - fast and hard and can't be turned back. Everything in the steering system is new - well I think the YearOne control valve is a refurb... Anyway, the first thing that comes to mind is that the hoses are on backwards since it wants to turn the opposite way, but the fittings won't allow you to put them on backwards... Next thing that comes to mind is the control valve is messed up. Anyone ever had this happen?
I know my fitting would let me put them on backwards.. Thats got to be what happend.. I just rebuilt my slave cylinder and the hoses at the cylinder were the same sized fittings..sounds kina weird though, how fast and hard its pushing the wheel.
I was thinking of the hoses from the pump to the control valve, they are not interchangeable. The hoses from the control valve to the slave cylinder are interchangeable.
I called Chockostang (where I got my steering box) and he said the same thing - that it had to be the hoses backwards. Mine are connected so that they are not crossed, they run parallel to each other like the ones I found in another post...

If i change them, they'll be crossed - is that correct?

Only one way to find out!! .. Go buy some more P/S fluid and get under there and switch them.. It should only take about 8 minutes if your slow about it.
I may have the same Problem when I start mine up.. I couldnt remember which hose went to which hole..

Well, I guess you're right, I'll switch them tonight. Wish I woulda called in sick to work today - I'm gonna be burnin the midnight oil working out the little bugs to get this thing roadworthy by Saturday morning!
Ha,, You and me both Nealro.. Im allways up working on my car, My wife tells me that if I want to spend 4 hours in the garage, then do it on my own time (my sleep time) so that Im not leaving her stuck with the kids (2&4). She lets me escape to the good ol garage now and then during the day, but we are usually trying to keep the kids amused.. I will usually be in the garage from about 9pm-1:30am, but at least its quality time with my baby..
had that exact problem with the full hydro steering on my Jeep.... yes, my hoses were backwards
We had fun with it at a run in Hot springs Ark last year.... we set up a mini rockcrawling course and made people drive with the backwards steering... some people got it some didnt it was funny.

I swapped the hoses last night and it did not resolve the problem. Spoke with my dad who discovered the original problem, evidently I was misinformed about what was really happening to begin with. I never saw the backward steering first hand, the car is in my dad's shop so him and a couple other guys tinker with it when I'm not around. Evidently it was NOT steering the opposite direction. What's really happening is, as soon as you try to turn the wheel it would jerk quickly back and forth to the right and left, never reaching the lock at either side. Doing some research, we found some actual instructions for how to install the control valve - who knew it had to be put on a certain way? Hell, we're Chevy guys and never installed such a thing as a control valve and slave cylinder 'til I bought a Mustang. Anyway, that is being investigated right now... there's still a glimmer of hope that the 'ol '68 will be running by wedding time.
Why am I on the computer and not at the shop then you ask? I've been banished from the garage until post wedding (Saturday) due to stress, amount of alcoholic beverage intake, potential injuries and dirty fingernails! seriously. have fun with that one guys.
