Default 460 in a 73?

Well I happen to have a 460 motor available that I'm thinking of building up this winter and dropping in to my 73. I have the 429 dove heads for it and I should really be able to make this engine run great. I've got the C6 transmission for it too. Right now I have the 351 Cleveland with the FMX tranny. Has anyone ever stuffed a 460 in their Mustang? Do you know if it would fit? Are there motor mounts available somewhere or would I have to custom weld my own? What do you guys think? Thanks.

Same mounts as a 71 429CJ. Just get the frame and engine mounts. And the frame mounts may be the same, not sure.

You'd want to take the motor mounts you have in your car, and weld the top of those to the bottom of a set of ones for a 460.

Dont forget the exhaust issues, I was involved in sticking a 429 in a 70, and someone makes a header kit specificaly for this job, each header comes in 3 pieces, makes it alot easier, but of course you have more places for a leak to develop.

The '71-'73 was made specifically to house the 385 series big block. Everything you need would be OE equipment.

70 and 71 are totally different. Like was said above, 429-460 in a 71-73 uses all factory parts. Headers are easy to find, hooker and several other companies make them.

Exhaust manifolds from a 76 Mercury Marquis with a 460 will fit right in. If you don't want headers, these manifolds areplentiful in many salvage yards.

Hope that helps, Dean

DO IT! It will fit! Trust me! Ford Powertrain Applications, Dark Horse Racing, and some others have what you need if you cant fine OEM stuff. I have a 429 in my 67 with no cutting. As has been said the 385 (429/460) was a factory fit in 71.

Awesome! That's what I was hoping for...I'm going to be shooting for 600 hp with nitrous or a blower. I haven't decided yet. I think I'll start building the motor this summer. I've got a friend that can make me custom headers/exhaust. I'm guessing I'll need a roll cage on this car when all is said and done, just to keep it from twisting on me! I can't wait...
