Default there must be another way

i am going to be running about 550 to 600+ hp in my 68, and so i need a 9" rear. but, the only problem is that i've been looking around and it looks like i am looking at around $2500+ for a 9" rear. so here comes the question......is there a cheaper way to do it? i have been hearing about 8.8", will one of those hold up? or am i just screwed over into paying lots of $$$?

8.8 won't hold up. The 9" is the only way to go. You can do it for less than $2500.

You can go to currie's or mosers website and build a bulletproof rear for less than $2500, or call them up and talk to them to see exactly what you need.

If you cant afford 2500 for a rear end, why build a 550-600+ engine?

The torque is what is going to snap things. Are you planning to run drag slicks that will load all the torque because they hook up, or a set of street tires that will roast with 300 ft/lbs or less? Anyway if you are set on a 9, they are the toughest of the bunch. You can keep your cost down if you if you shop for a used setup. The housing can be cut to fit, the axles will need made to fit, some axles can becut and re-splinedand some can't.You may look around the junkyards before dropping agrand or two. A good Rod shop can section the housing.

Horsepower costs money. My rear end from start to finish with all new suspension parts and rear discs cost about 3 grand. What motor are you running and what tranny?

yes it will, it all about how you build the damn thing. My friend works at a performance shop, and thye build 8.8's to hold 1000hp, for outlaw class stangs. stock it wont hold it no. what car do you have, their is a cheaper way to do it. ok NVM i just answered my question. look for a 64-71 cougar, versaille. your flange to flange is 59.25" those cars had the same flange to flange maybe a 3/4" larger, but thats not a problem. you should be ale to find them in a junkyard, and here is a link that can help you out. you'll pay 300-600 for the junkyard rear, and rebuild it for ???hp and save 1k.
