Default control valve adjustment

im going to try to fix my steering problem by checking the adjusting nut setting. i see where i turn it out from stop 1/4 turn. what i need to know is fluid going to come out of the cap i need to take off to get to the adjusting nut. am i going to need a new seal or gasket to have on hand or is the adjusting nut separate from the fluid. im having a problem with it feeling like manual steering after i come to a stop.
