351 or 302 for my 69 fastback
I found two motors for my 69 fastback. first one is a 96 351 out of a truck with 65,000 miles the second is a 302 out of a 86 mustang. I plan on running mass air efi. Both have all brackets induction setups but no wire harnesses. I know I will have to switch oil pan and timing covers. I am going to use a t-5 5 speed tranny. I realize that more cubes are always better but is it worth the hassle of switching the injection system on the 351? This car will be driven often so I want reliability. I plan on swapping cams in what ever motor I get. Which is another question is either motor run roller cams? I guess I was just worried about the 302 being a little small. I had a 2000 GT convertible and loved it and would like a similar acceleration for my 69 with getting similar gas mileage, (I know I don't ask much). I have a while to think because I am only in the body work stage but found these two and thought I would snap one up. I think he also has a 302 out of a explorer but don't remember what year.
Thanks

If I understand you correctly, you want a reliable, mildly modified daily driver type engine?
If it were me, I would go with the 351 in the 69 to compensate for the fact that the car is heavier than earlier models.
I would also take the later model engine over the older one.
BUT - you need a response from someone who knows which engine is which as not all 351s are equal!
I suggest you pm andrewmp6 - he knows a fair bit about the mass air flow efi system.

care to explain how not all 351's not equal?

I was thinking particularly of the 351M, but this is a Cleveland derivative.
With the W's, they changedcastings, added EFI, made modifications to suit different series of cars the engines were used in. So, if 351W were the same from 1969 to 1996, I would be very surprised.
351.. I think that a roller setup in a 351 with a good cam and efi would make you happy. You gas mileage is going to probably be about the same with both motors,, not that you would care while your stomping the gas. You want something that will be dependable, and the 351w is a very easy block to work with, anda balanced, good cam, roller mod, and lightweight internals will go a long way to making some good power especially with the heavier 69 body.. Plus the 351 is newer,, rebuild it.. and slap it in.. What do you have to switch on the injection system?? Computer?
I'd go with the 351W, but I'm not sure what EFI parts availability is with that.I don't think you'regoing to be able to cram the truck intake under the hood of your Mustang, so you're probably looking at aftermarket. I believe Holley and Edelbrock both offer EFI (although not mass-air) systems, and there's a couple other small companies floating around that offer full mass-air systems built from existing OEM parts. Just not sure if they offer them for 351W's.
The 351W is likely going to break a stock T5 though. They're only good to about 330ft-lbs before the tailshaft snaps. You can get a G-Force T5 that will withstand the power you'll be making, or try to cram a TKO under the car (will require some 'massaging' of the tunnel).

New development. I got a call today, my buddy has a 1969 or 70 block with out heads he will sell for $50.00. It was never bored and looks pretty nice. Is the older blocks any better or is the newer blocks the way to go?
