Check to see if the lower butterfly shaft is wobbled out. They have a tendency to leak there.

if its wobbled out what does that mean as far as the integrity of the carb goes?

They leak like a sieve, right onto the intake and of course jack up vacuum. Supposedly there was a kit to fix the problem, but it wasn't all that great.

I have one just like it.

if you rebuilt the entire carb would it matter?

Not really. The problem isn't the shaft itself, it's the hole through the carb body.

even if it's junk, for $75 it's worth picking up just for the spare parts.

There are teflon or phenolicbushings there, and if I recall right, that was how they fixed the problem. When mine started, I was at a car club meeting where we discussed this. I would add, that these guys drag race their cars, and are in their late 60's, so they aren't novices.

If I was going to buy a carb, mind you, 75 is worth the parts, IF you have that carb, I would check the shafts, see if all the fuel bowl screws are proper, and make sure that they are still holding thread. It would get a complete rebuild before going on my engine.
