4 to 5 Lug Conversion
Hi there,
I have 68 coupe inline six that when I bought it was in the process of getting ready for a v8 conversion. I have the 5 lugs in the rear, but still have the 4 in the front. I had mentioned this before and many of you suggested upgrading to discs in front- which I plan on doing next spring. I just bought new rims and tires (5 lug) and can't wait to put them on. So my quesition is this.
Is there anyway to simply upgrade my front 4 lug set up to 5 lugs knowing that I'll be swaping my front drums for discs this spring?
Any advice or insite would be great.
thanks

Let me make sure this is clear
so in the spring you want to upgrade to disc brakes......but right now you want to change your 4 lug drum brakes....to 5 lug drum brakes so that you can run your new rims on all 4 tires....
the only way I think you can do this is to change your spindle to a v8 spindle....and then you would have to find some drum brakes off of a old mustang with the 5 lug pattern, and that should work.
Im not sure that a 5 lug drum setup off a v8 car willl fit with the inline six spindle.
FYI you would need a v8 spindle later anyway to upgrade to Disc brakes anyway

Since you have a '68, I think your spindles are the same as for a v8 car. That said, it still sounds like you are going to spend WAY more than you need to because you are making 2 conversions. Look at the kit at www.discbrakeswap.com for $525 you get it all.
Found this off a different forum.

65/66 6 cyl spindles are different from V8 spindles
67/68 6 cyl and V8 spindles are the same
The 6 cyl backing plates and drums are different
from the V8 versions on 65-68

It breaks down like this in the MPC for replacement parts:
65/6: two spindles, I-6 and a V-8
67: one spindle, all engine/brake combos
68/69: drum spindle, same as 67, a disc spindle, a Boss 302 spindle and a Boss 429 spindle.
70-73: drum spindle, disc spindle

front you just need new hubs and brakes rear end http://www.perogie.com/Rears.htm for brakes http://www.mustangsteve.com/cobrabrakes.html the cobra brakes are pbr same thing as baer really is cheaper too but youll need 17s to clear them.
