1966 Convertible - Worth It?
First let me apologize, I am a newbie and have a lot of questions. I have a chance to pick up a 1966 Convertible. I have not seen the car yet, but my wife got the scoop on most of the car. The details are it is a 1966 Vert (of course) that runs. It needs a new carb, and exhaust. Currently, according to her, there is a 350 in it, now I am guessing they put this in, I know it isn't a Ford engine, but hey it runs for now. The body is in dire need of help. It needs a new hood, a new quarter panel, and the other quarter panel is filled with bondo. There is more rust on the body, but I am not sure of the frame and undercarriage.
He is asking $3000 for it. Since it runs and is driveable, I am thinking that it may be worth it. But with all the body work that is required I am unsure. That is why I am coming to the experts. This will be a project car and I don't mind having to work on it. But I just don't want to get screwed with the price. I am also sure and ready to sink a few dollars into it to get it close to perfect.
Another thing, I am unsure if he has the title to the car or if it is a salvage title. I it is a salvage title or no title at all, is it possible to get a title to get it registered.
Any advice anyone can give me is greatly appreciated. I am going Thursday to take a look at it, so anything I should really pay attention to let me know.
Thanks in advance,

i've always loved the old conv. Well it's really a question of how bad you want it. I would prob. buy it. Can you do body work? if so then it'll probably be a nice little project to work on. The only down side is the 350. a 350 is a small block chevy, now im a chevy guy too so im not gonna rag it, but i believe a Ford car should have a ford engine, a chevy should have a chevy engine, etc. etc.
I'd say it depends on how bad you want that convertable and how much work your willing to do on it. If you are gona restore it and get rid of all the rust and get it near perfect then it will be worth some good cash.
and are you sure they didnt say 351 instead of 350?

yeah, i hope they meant 351, someone putting a small block chevy in a mustang. There's nothing wrong with it. My uncle has two 39 & 40 ford coupes, both with chevy 350 in them.
they are easier to work on.

Look at the rims and see if it has 4 or 5 lug nuts on it.

I think the deal-breaker would be the health of the frame rails. If they're solid, I'd say buy the car. If they're rusted, there's a chance the whole thing could break in half. The quarter panel replacement is NOT inexpensive or easy; but typically an early convertible is worth the trouble (even for a 6-cylinder car). I wouldn't take the seller at his word that all the rust you see is all there is, either. $3000 is way cheap for one of these cars... WAY cheap! Take a minute a browse eBay. You'll get an idea what they're fetching. Have a look at the VIN. Get back to us with that (if you can), and we can tell you what the car is supposed to have.
Smartest thing you could do is find a knowledgeable Mustanger to go with you. There are sooooo many variables to take into consideration.
