Default Fuel sending unit

Has anybody had problems with the after market fuel sending units for our cars?? I replaced the original 2 years ago because the gauge was not registering the fuel level on my 66 coupe. That unit lasted a little over a year and then leaked, the grommet/fasterner (inside tank) that holds the wire nut assembly warpped due to the gas and caused it to leak around that base. Replaced it and 13 months later had the same issue. Call NPD and explained what happened for the 2nd time and that I would need a third unit. They advised they had not gotten any recalls or previous incidents similar to what I had but they did send me a replacement at no cost which I appreciated.

Just curious if anyone has had similar issues with these replacements???

i am in the market to buy a new one. however i need the efi one since my car is fuel injected. its leaking slightly also. im wondering if i should geta new gasket first and see if that fixes it, or just buy a new $100 unit. ugh.

any suggestions why else it would leak?

look at the pic below. it looks like its leaking from the gasket but if you look at the yellow and even the green arrows the fuel is leaking there as well. which is above the gas tank sending unit. (the pic is upside down) physics 101. liquid flows downward with the force of gravity. lol so how can this be wet. also look at the pink arrow. it looks like there was a previous "home" repair around the tube connectors. any suggestions, buy a new gasket or replace the whole unit. ???

IMO - Id replace the whole unit just for piece of mind. Leaking fuel is VERY dangerous ! [:-]

Hope this helps!

stupid question, but whats the best way to replace the sending unit. i mean, how to drain the gas tank and so on. i dont want to run the car untill its empty and run out of gas, i dont have a working gas gauge so i cant gauge how much gas i have left to empty. and what can i drain it into? seems like a simple thing to do, but i would just like anyones opinion or experiences

also i just noticed. there are two wires going through the sending unit. in the pic, there black and red. but when i look at new ones to buy, they dont show those wires, is this something aftermarket such as a fuel pump thats inside the gas tank?

you could carry a gallon gas can in the car and drive it till it is empty then you will have gas.

Just pull off the gas line and let it drain into a five gallon bucket. Just be ready to put the line back on if the bucket gets full. Those wires go to the fuel gauge in your dash. The new sending unit will have connections for those two wires.

opie2, ok thanks for the input, sounds simple enough. however heres what the new sending unit looks like, i dont see any connections for those two wires. there is one more connection that you cant see in my first picture, but you can see in this one. it looks like the end of a bolt and youcan screw ona nut, or in my case on my car its like an end cap and thats where the other red wire is connected to.

my wire(s) has an end cap on it that just pops onto that bolt end for the connection. Thats were my leak was at, that whole bolt shaft was loose. Just took a look at the car ealier today and noticed it still has a leak. It looks like the bottom of the ring, I will try to remove and check that the gasket seated correctly. Hope that will cure it, its a pain to put up with the fuel drip/smell.
