Default toploader questions

are the 2.77 & the 3.03 3-speed trannys considered toploaders?
how can i tell the two trannys apart? serial #'s ?

IIRC, both are considered toploader by design. The 2.77 does not have synchronized gears and was made prior to the 3.03 tranny. The 2.77 only came with the 170 and 200ci engines. The 3.03 came with inline 6 and V8. There should be an identification plate on the upper right extension housing attaching bolt (info from the 67 shop manual). The top three numbers should be the numbers you are looking for for ID purposes...hope this helps

and if you don't have a tag on the trans, i BIELIEVE that the number 3.03 or 2.77 stand for the length of the tail shaft, I'm not 100% percent but 90%

No, definitely not it, heh. The tail shaft is quite a bit longer than 3" I believe it's the input bearing diameter. Something like that.

it has something to do with the tailshaft, mabey the lenght of it from the end of the housing, because i remeber reading it in an old statement the ford released to"inform" the public
