Changing oil pan gasket

Default Changing oil pan gasket

I walked into my shop yesterday and my engine was leaking oil all over the floor. turns out the drain plug is stripped so i am gonna replace it and the oil pan gasket and just get it out of the way . What type of rtv should i coat the oil pan with then place the cork gaskets over? i picked up a vicktor oil pan gasket set black rtv? grey? or orange? thanks

The guy i had put the engine together used orange could that be a reason why it leaks?

the only kind i have ever used is black.

Actually, for a pan gasket blue, black, or orange should be ok.
I believe the only difference is temperature range.

Color doesn't matter. the type matters! Choose a RTV with the specific application in mind (read the package). Most folks use black color. the important thing is that all is clean and dry during assembly, wipe off the excess if you can.

I used the red/orange stuff.. For everything..

I'd recommend The Right Stuff (quick drying and oil/fuel resistant), but generally any black RTV should work just fine.

Just use the Fel Pro 1 piece molded rubber with steel core gasket. Then you don't need sealant
