Rebuilding the engine
So my 200 hp 289 has gotta go. Instead of buying a new ford crate engine 5.0, people have been telling me to just rebuild the entire engine and keep the 289 block.
I'd like around 350hp at the FW when it's done. I'm buying a new c4 trans as well. I've already swapped the rear end for a 3.89 locking differential.
Since this is my first time rebuilding, do you have any reccomendations for obtaining 350 hp or so with the original 289 block?

Has the block been bored before?? If so, if its already at .030 over I would reccomend just going for the crate motor.. Anything over .030 more could possibly cause some problems.. Supposedly.. Why not go with the new roller 302 or a 302 longblock and just bolt up your headers and intake/carb onto that??
If you want 350 HP.. I do not think a rebuild will get you there.
About 10 years ago I rebuilt my 289, put on an edelbrock performer intake, 4bbl carb and dual exahust. It was a bit of a disappointment, as it did not perform as good as I hoped.
This spring my plan is a 347 stroker. That will give 340HP or perhaps a bit more.

Hey Dude,
It can be done with a little money, willingness to do the work, and a plan. I recently, dynoed my 333 (bored .040, 3.25 stroke, 5.400 rods, 10:1 CR, fully ported windsor jr Iron lungs w/ 1.94 Int. & 1.60 Exh., Edle Performer RPM, Edle 600 CFM, custom CI cam).My junk made 334 RWHP. w/ 448 lbs.RWTQ & 3200 RPM.with my labor andnew rotating assembly, new hydro Roller custom cam, springs, and retainers.
Utilzing a 302 kit,you could get close to your goal, but will need good heads and a customground roller cam. "Roller", is the only way to go these days for a street warrior.
Good Luck!

philgrocks, you should be pushing way more than 340 hp. im building my 347 that will have at least 430 at the FW. we were able to push out 427hp outta a 331 stroker at my work so the 347 should hold a tad more. im going with a hydraulic cam, afr heads, edelbrock intake, holly dubl pumpr carb. etc. of course, i will have it professionally tuned at my work so i may be able to get a little more power than if someone built it theirself. i dont know if your building it yourself or having a shop build it. but i know my shop can touch around 440hp outta the 347.

Hey "theautomatics",
These respondants, make a lot of hood points, in the end, it's the "goal", "a plan" for the use of the engine that needs to be determined before you lay out any $$$s. These 289s are light weight and are capable of makinga ton of power, with the right combination assembly. It's just my 2 cents, but, where do you want to make the power? Are you looking for a drag queen, (high end breather), or street warrior (low end breather). On the street, most "reasonable" usable andpower (torque) will be in the low mid 3000s anyway.Although I am very happy with my "street warrior",if and when, I build another 289,It will be a short rod 347 with canfields, prosystem carb, and custom CI roller.
Determine your goal, do the research, heat up the garage, begin purchasing parts.
As always, good luck!
If it were mine, I'd reubild the stock block to 302 or 331, and match the heads, cam and intake for a moderately aggressive setup. That would put you at a nice, street driveable rice killer that won't destroy the rest of your drivetrain.
