'68 Rear Ends
I recently looked at a '68 that was an original 6 cylinder car. When I looked under the rear, I saw a rear end that had a rear cover.
Now I'm not that familiar with 2nd gen cars, but I thought it would have had a 8" rear in it, with a third member that come out the front (like my '65).
Did '67/68 cars have a rear with a rear cover?

Only on the I-6's, that would be a 7 1/4 (?) rear, fine for a six cylinder, but if you plan on changing over to a V-8 you would want to upgrade to an 8" or 9" (or possibly an 8.8). Generally, small block V-8's came with 8" rears (front loading, like your 65) except for Hi-Po which I believe came with the 9" (also front loading and looks similar to the 8").
your rear in a 67-68 ir is a 7.5" rear, and if your not going to a BB or sc/tt or some high Hp output, you wont have to worry about the rear for a while, a stock 302 doesnt put out enough tq to hurt your rear.
Yes its a 7.25 they have a diff cover plate like most normal rear ends the 8 inchs and 9 inch are the different ones. The inline6 cars came with a different rear end tell 69 ot 71 i forgot the year.
Same rear, but I thought it was a 7.5" v. a 7.25".
And as USMC says above, it will hold up, not as well as a 8" or 9", but it will do. The biggest problem is the 4 lug pattern.
