part# or vin#?
For future reference Ford part numbers are pretty simple to decode.
For example;
The alpha code A = 1940's ( very rarely seen even on NOS parts and packaging )
The alpha code B = 1950's ( commonly seen, but not always )
C = 60's , D=70's , E=80's etc ... These denote the decade that a particular part was INTRODUCED into service.
The next character is the YEAR of the decade this part was introduced . For example B5 = 1955 , C9 = 1969 , D7 = 1977 and so forth.
The next character is a letter denoting the APPLICATION that this part was originally designed for. Don't be fooled because many, MANY parts found their way into other models and bodystyles. For example ...
A = Big Car
B = Bronco
Z = Mustang
T = truck ( usually light truck )
H = truck ( always heavy truck )
O = Fairlane & Torino
M = Mercury big car
L = Lincoln
D = Granada
F = Pinto
U = van
There are others but these are the most common.
The last character is just an engineering revision code and doesn't mean much to people like us.
So then, if yourpart has a C7ZZ number on it, we know that it probably came out of a 1967 or later Mustang.However we know that it was designed FOR the Mustang line.It could have also come from aGalaxie , Fairlane or any other Ford product that utilized the same component.
Hope this helps, Dean
