Default 65' Convertible = Senior project?

Hello. I'll start with some background. I'm a senior in high school and I'm in this program that allows me to do a project in place of my second semester of English. I would like to do something that interests me and something that will help me in my future goals. I want to be a mechanical engineer and am currently applying to colleges (so much fun). My idea for my project is to restore my dad's 65' I6 convertible. I'm new to the Mustang scene and I really only have experience with Jeep's (which are kinda different). So I'd love some help/suggestions. It's all stock (except I recently found that at some point it was given an auto trans). The odometer says 49,398 but we're not sure if that actually means 49,398 or 149.398, but we're leaning towards the latter. My dad tells me it was pretty much the bottom of the line. It's has the air supension in the back and a AM radio but other than that, nothing. It's "Vintage Burgandy Metallic" with a black interior and top. The top was replaced recently but the transmition needs to be rebuilt (There's alot of play and it's leaking). So I guess the first question would be restore or restomod? I would just really love some input and suggestions because I'm not sure i know what i'm talking about yet. If you want more info just let me know and I'll try to get a picture up ASAP. Thanks!

If its just a 6 cyl and the trans is no longer original, I would restomod that thing. Still try to stay away from kits that require welding or cutting the metal, just in case you want to change it again or change it back. There are plenty of options out there for anything that you want to do; suspension, rack and pinion steering, brakes, v8 swap.

Well technically it's a one smester deal but I'm not planning on finishing it in that time. Personally i don't have a lot of skills or experience, but that is the point of doing the project. I'm not to worried because i do know a few people that do know what they're doing. Truthfully, I'm not sure, but that's why im here, to get more info. I'm thinkin engine and trans swap, which in turn means suspension I know. I'm still trying to get a feel for whats out there.

well it looks like you have an idea what your going to be getting yourself into, if you have the funds i would definately go the restomod route with that thing. well at least a v8 swap

I want to be a mechanical engineer

Great choice! I am an engineer and think this would be a very good idea. I graduated two years ago, so I am quite familiar with what you're heading into. It's actually very common for Mechanical Engineering students to do their college senior project on a SAE mini-baja or formula one car. I think this would be an excellent place for you to start, assuming you can get it approved by the faculty, have the funds to get going, and have realistic goals (in the scope of the class).

As far as if the car is a good choice and all that other jazz, I cannot help you with. I'm trying to figure all of that out right now myself! Good luck! Pictures are always good!

Oh, btw...do NOT neglect your math this year!

Thanks. I like math. I'm in Calculus AP and Statistics AP. I'm really hoping it works out. It's exciting yet stressful.

If you're going into engineering you need to like math. AP Calc and AP stats...the best you can do at this level. Good choice. I know it seems stressful, but if it helps at all...know that it will get ALOT worse!

Oh yeah...definitely go V8. I at least know that much!
