The bellhousing will only matter for the engine. The back of the bellhousing will be able to accomodate multiple transmissions.

Check with a company like Lakewood for a bellhousing to fit your engine, and it can be made to fit anything from a Toploader 4-speed to a Tremec 6-speed.

I'm not really looking to spend alot of money. An addapter bellhousing could set me back 5-600 bucks. I'm just looking to pull out a 3-4 speed from one of many local scrap yards to swap in. I would just like to know what kind of car or truck to get it out of and what kind of transmission to look for.

I'll try this again...the tranny doesn't matter as much as the bell housing. You need a bell housing that has the pattern that matches your engine. When you have that, you'll know what transmissions you can run. The transmission and bell housing are two separate pieces. Good luck finding a 5-bolt bell housing in a junk yard...they are going to be very rare.

I hate the word (rare) because every time I hear it somebody always want's more than whatit's worth, because they think its (rare). (Rare) becomes a selling point, you should buy it because it's (rare). Search (rare) on e-bay you'll find lots of things that you own, and everybody else owns. Brainerd my hometown has 13 diffrentjunkyards to chose from. Where do you think I got the running 65' mustang 289 engine from? Some could say that's (rare) I call it there for the asking $100deal, more where that came from. Last week I drove home a 76' ford Elite almost rust free, $150ever hear of one of those? I usualy don't deal with things this old, so I figured Iwould ask and someone might know.

Aren't you glad you tried to help? To your point about 5 bolt bells being rare, I'll just say this, I worked in a junk yard in the early to mid seventies and we had 15-20 Mustangs in the yard all the time. At that time it was very unusual to see a five bolt bell and whe we did, we didn't save them as no one wanted them.

the early cars had the 5 bolt bellhousing like 64.5 and earlier the 6 bolt bellhousing is supposed to be smoother compared to the 5 bolt so it took over in 65duty i guess uyou can look for falcons fairlanes etc andthing older than 65

Why can't anyone around here get a straight answer to posters around here any more. Do you even read what they are asking before you post. He wants to know what cars other then mustang had a trans that will work in a mustang with a 5 bolt bellhousing. now to try to answer to the best of my knowlage the bolt hole for the trans. to the bellhousing is the same on 5 and 6 bolt housing so you are pretty open to options. Fairlanes and torinos are good sources along with mavricks. pretty much any car that came with a v8 and manual trans should work up to the mid 70's.

hope this helps

Sure they did. Like Fairlanes, Comets and Falcons. But the majority of those vehicles were equipped with six cylinder engines. Of the few that hadV8's, mosthad automatic transmissions. The same holds true for the big cars. The five bolt pattern was only used from 62 to early 65. Anyhow, good luck in your quest.
