We finally got my cars floor welded in, the next step is to find a frame shop and get minor work done and confirm the body is straight, then immediatly after get it media blasted. It will be garaged as long as possible, but Id like to get the engine, trunk and floor painted up with POR15. Browsing their website I see they have kits for the engine, floor and trunk. Anyone use these, or should I just get the 6 can kits and do small things. Painting the engine bay is not a priority and I can do that later. Thanks guys.

 

My body shop tells me that POR 15 is supposed to be used over rusted metal, not on fresh metal. I'm not sure if its in your best interest to cover teh floors, trunk, AND engine bay in POR 15, however people do it anyway.

 

Yes por15 works best over rust then clean metal por stands for paint over rust which it does nicely.Best thing i found for floor pans is spray on truck bed liners even the roll on ones work well.

 

+1 on spray on bed liners. But stay away from herculiner, it rubs off from normal wear and tear (friend's jeep, didn't last 6 months) and it doesn't do well with heat, gets gooey and slides off. Go with line-x or rhino liner. The best is line-x, its a sealant, its heat tested, blast tested by the USAF and stuff will slide and wash right off of it. I've seen the products side by side first hand and any day of the week I would take line-x for the few more dollars it costs.

 

I only used the roll on for inter fenders or on the back of anything fiberglass.

 

I also used bed liner for my undercarriage and on the inside of the car. I did have some come off when reworking the area. I ended spraying epoxy satin finish paint over the bed liner paint with good results.

 

Where do you get the bedliner material? AutoZone?

 

Before you use POR-15 you might want to look at Eastwoods rust Encapsulator.
(no I don't work for them), I have a PDF of an article in Auto Restorer magazine where they did a test on both side by side, the Eastwood stuff won hands down. Let me know, and I can send you a copy.

Napa, AutoZone, Advanced Auto, etc.....Neither of them had it stock around here, but NAPA ordered it for me.

 

+1 on Rust Encapsulator. That stuff sticks good to any condition metal. And you can top coat with your choice of toppings. Also, Napa and Advanced is where I got my spray on bedliner. Good stuff too. I think it is made by Dupli-Color.
