Default Towing Question

Hi Folks,

Anyone able to tell me the towing capacity of a 1983 GLX Convert with the V6 engine?

I had one years ago and have the chance to buy another one. I used to tow my boat with it but cannot remember what the weight of the boat was.

Any help is MOST appreciated!

Mustangs are not rated with towing capacity.
They are not designed for towing hence the lack of rating
Any use of a mustang to tow something goes against manufactures suggested use for the automobile which usually involves simple transportation and the picking up of chicks with mall hair who's IROC broke down outside of IHOP where they stopped off for some fresh and fruity at 2am.
With that said, I would not pull more than a 2k load tops with a mustang, so I suppose if its a REALLY SMALL boat I would not trust the unibody to stand up well to towing. I also know lotsa people tow trailers, boats, various other things with all sorts of cars big and small. I have a very strong opinion about it and it is mostly negative as soon as the load is larger than 2k lbs since 99.9% when I see it they are using a simple tag with a high weight and no on board brakes so they are relying on their auto both for starting and stopping a load that sometimes weights in more than their own car. Always a bad idea in my mind.

Mustang with small trailer that seems ok

Mustang with small trailer that appears to be WAY overloaded for the car

Easily pulled type of boat with car

Very questionable towing choice in my mind since he has the weight of the skip, the trailer, and what ever junk he is paking in both the boat and the roof rack (but the boat and trailer are prob. light enough)

Most towing experts recommend you don't tow anything above 85% of you car's curb weight

I may be a little more skittish and recommending you stay under 2k (roughly 70-75% your curb weight I think) but I would rather be safe.

PS...at 2k weight and a v6...don't try to go over any mountains or start fast....you will have trouble IMO maintaining speed and a fast start will despline your gear hubs in the trans
