Resto-Cherry
I'm starting on my 67 coupe now, could use any suggestions you have. The car is far from stock, needs to be pretty much stripped for repair.
The drive train is taken from a 92 5.0 with a 5 speed tranny, not sure what rear end is in it yet. the engine has about 50k on it, seems to be doing just fine. 2 1/2 inch exhaust, Flowmasters, Hedd headers. the FI was stripped and replaced with an Edelbrock high rise and an Edelbrock 4bbl. Still has the serpentine belts (which I KNOW are better but I hate the look and they take up a lot of space, want to get a more 67 look with the old style pulleys.) Needs a new fan and shroud. Gel battery to replace ol' Leak and Rot there in the corner - maybe mounted aft in the trunk.
Has had a disk kit installed on the front and some kind of new control arm set up that lowered the front end a little and made the steering very neutral. Still has the original steering, which I already rebuilt (should have replaced it with a rack and pinion sincethe overhaul went about $500-it was toast.)
The car was in a front end collision about 24 years back where it was totalled. The front frame rails wer since straightened and re-enforced and seem fine. For some reason I have yet to ken the cross member was welded in. Other than some very light surface rust (and battery damage up front) the underside seems in very good condition.
But, Lots of body rust. The frame repair did not include a replacement torque box for some reason and the previous owner could'nt understand why the A-pillar kept cracking every time it was repaired. led to a lot of rust on the pillar and some on the floor (replaced twelve years ago.) So, replacement drip rail on the way now.
The new torque box looks good to go, all welded in. I couldn't find anyone around here who seemed really familiar with welding it in so I went to a local fab shop and supervised the installation. looks well and stoutly installed, unless there is some detail I haven't anticipated.
New trunk lid mounted already to make sure the trun is dry. Trunk was redone and looks nice.
Planning to replace the trunk panel, hood, front fenders, cowl, rear quarters (hopefully just the bottoms), inner front fender and radiator support from all that battery leakage, and lots of chrome parts, all the wiring.
Any suggestions or advice welcome. I am a resto-cherry.
