Reach around under the dash and locate the switch. Carefully unplug the wiring.

Now, there's a tiny button usually located on the bottom of the switch that you must push to release the
**** so you can remove it.
Some times the little button may be on one side or the other depending on how
the switch was installed.
Until you find and push in that tiny button while pulling out the **** you will never be able to remove the switch.

holy crap i didn't know that button released it. I just pulled and pulled until it came off. I pretty much destroyed my switch anyway from other methods i tried before i figured it out. Soooo learn from my mistakes jjs3692, once u get the *** off you will see the cylinder thing. it will have a + shape, I just took a regular screwdriver to unthread it. once you unscrew this cylinder it should all fall loose.

EDIT: this is on my 69 btw, so it shoud be similar for your car.

+1...if you are replacing the switch its easier to get an idea of where the button is if you have the new one in hand and look it over. i actually have an extra switch that doesnt work but i could get you a pic of the button if you need one

You may have to release the button with the wiring plug in place also. The wayI do this process is to depress the button and then pull the light switch activation post out all at once. You can also pull the switch post all the way out and then push the button but the button is diffucult to push if you're preloading the post ( pulling on it too hard). once the post is out you unscrew the bezel that holds the switch to the dash and the whole thing sould then flop loose under the dash. good luck

That's funny, I had to replace my switch the first time because I couldn't figure it out and I ended up just yanking the **** out of the dash. Of course that ruined the switch, but at least I was able to get the switch out from behind the dash and see the button for future reference. I needed a new switch anyways, that's what I kept telling my wife all the way to the mustang shop anyways! haha
