Default HEI question

I'm thinking about putting one of the HEI distributors like this on in my mustang. I havea 351W and have heard that there may be issues with some aftermarket intakes and clearance. Right now I have a Holley Street Dominator intake but was contemplating a WeiandStealth intake. Anyone know if it will clear? Otherwisecould someone that has one for a 351Wmeasure the diameter and how far above the manifold that the main body of the distributor is. Thanks in advance.

I know this is not the question you asked but I will give you my opinion any way I would not put on an HEI distributor. The Ford duraspark electronic ignition system is a much better way to go with full voltage at all RPM ranges, and with the addition of an MSD box such as the 6A you will get latterly the most bang for your buck. Also in relation to your actual question, buy going with a Ford part any potential clearance issues are eliminated.

Yeah. I'm looking for simple for this engine at least. I'm going to try to use the engine that came with the car to begin with. I will build up another engine later and will put better components on that build.

morning,

i just put one of those in a 289. The airfilter housing wouldn't fit anymore as this distributor is massive!
I don't know about the 351 though. never saw one.

I went and got the pertronix flamethrower II distributor together with coil.
basically a HEI distributor like the one in your picture, just that the coild is detached (as in original setup).
Looks way cooler, does the axact same and no clearance issues

looks somethig like that:

I originally tried to out one on and it did not clear my hi rise manifold. I ending up taking an electronic ignition from an 82 mustang and adding an MSD box. Awesome!

MSD is only an option if you have money to burn. But I hear from all sides that MSD stuff is great
