Default 66 flexplate problems

I restored my 66 mustang with the 200 six cylinder with c4 automatic tranmission. about every 500 miles i have to replace the flex plate. my flex plate does not have teeth on it. the torque converter has the teeth on it for the starter. can anyone help me or suggest what to do. i just drive it to car shows and parades, i have replaced about 4 of them on it. the motor runs smooth and i dont think the crank is bent. the motor and trans has less than 3000 mile on it. thanks for any help. the flex plate cracks around the area connected to the motor.danny

Default RE: 66 flexplate problems

I'm not too familiar with your set-up, exactly, but I've had similar problems. Check that the bolts are not bottoming out and that the lock washers are still good. If the bolts bottom out or the lock washers aren't doing their job, that flexplate is going to be sort of flopping around. Even a little bit can cause it to crack because it's not meant to have that kind of strain on it and gradually, it'll crack from the stress.

I recently had a flexplate come loose because it wasn't torqued down enough, but it didn't actually break, it just made a lot of noise. I also had a front pulley break off because the bolts bottomed out and the lock washers weren't doing their job.
