Default electrical problems 69 mustang

ok first let me ask... if my distributor is not hook up will that cause the fallowing problem.... ok so i put in a good battery today... i hooked it up and grounded it to the block... its reading 12 volts going to the solenoid.... but when i go to turn on the lights to see if all is hook up right ( since the car has been in the process of restoring since feb) and i have no juice... what could be causing this?

im not too keen on electrical but id assume the distributor not being hooked up has something to do with it, so i take it the coil isnt hooked up eaither?

yeah the coil isnt hooked up because i have one of those distri. that have the coil built in... personally i dont see how having the distri hooked up or not would make a differance.. especially since i need to run a hot line from my ignition to my distributor... and as of right now with this problem, my ignition has no juice

Power is supplied to the car through the big black (with some blue paint on it in this case) wire with the ring terminal on the upper right. Make sure you have it on the correct side of your solenoid.

Also make sure the light system is grounded well. A wiring diagram could help shed some light also...no pun intended.

Just grounding the block is not enough. Also you need to ground the frame and the light circuits. If you fail to ground the light circuits they willnot work.

I'm not using the original wiring to the alternator any more (I've wired in a newer 2G alternator) but here is what it looked like when I took the old one out:
