Default Fastback and Coupe, interchangeable?

Hey, I had a quick question. I'm new to classic 'Stangs, so I'm not sure about a few things. My wife is obsessed with the 65-66 Fastbacks, and we want to build one. The problem is finding a good one to start with that isn't already fully restored, and one that doesn't cost my firstborn kid. I am pretty good with sheetmetal and body work and I was wondering if a coupe could be converted to a fastback? Are the wheelbases the same? Could I use new re-production sheetmetal and do the conversion? I've seen people selling a decent coupe and a basket case fastback as a pair before, saying you could make one good fastback out of it.

Obviously it wouldn't be worth as much as an original fastback, but we're not interested in building one to sell, I think my wife would keep it forever. I've done quarter panels, door skins, etc on classic cars before. So I know I could do the work, I just want to know if its something that is possible, without unnecessary butchering of the car.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks
Oh yeah, I tried the search feature first but didn't find anything, so don't flame me too bad.

It has been done. Search a bit on the web and there's some information. Not much I'm afraid, as that is pretty severe surgery.

When i was looking for a mustang i wanted a 67/68 fastback couldnt afford one so i did some research on the fastback roof on a coupe.Lets just say i could buy a real fastback not much more and couldnt sell it for alot since the vin shows its a coupe.Id save up your money and get a fastback or get a coupe.

$7000, not bad....I would buy a real one for the simple reason "it's real". Doing all that work and it not coming out exactly perfect would drive me crazy and you will save nothing in the end...Good Luck hunting, you will find or may have found one.

There was a site showing how one guy did it its down or gone now.Heres one its a coupe they put the fastback roof on its almost finshed and cheap http://louisville.craigslist.org/car/484294837.html but what you spend on shipping you might come out cheaper finding a fastback.
