FMX linkage question

Default FMX linkage question

OK. So I got a deal on a rebuilt FMX transmission to replace the worn out FMX in my 1970 fastback. I couldn't pass up $100 for the transmission, new converter, new driveshaft yoke and transmission mount. The new trans looks great, but the shift lever on the new transmission is not the same as the one on the transmission that came out of the car. The new one supposedly came out of a 65 mustang. Everything else matches up fine. Does anyone know if the 70 shifter will work OK, or am I going to have to change the shift lever on the transmission to get it to work? If so, how big of a job is it to change that lever??

FMX never came i a 65. How much different is it? Does it go down vice up? If it is for a column shift car it won't work. You make be able to take parts from the old trans to make the new one work.

Yeah, I know that it didn't come from the factory on a 65. What I meant was that someone had put it into a 65 and that is the car it came out of before I got it. Even saw the 65. When I get home tonight I'll see if I can get a couple of pictures of them both. If I do have to change the linkage is it a simple job or do I have to tear the whole transmission apart?

I would think if it worked in a 65 it will work in yours. Swapping the linkage may include changing valve bodies too. I'm really not sure about that. There are some good transmission guys that visit this site. They may have some ideas for you. Pic's would help.

Here are some pictures of the linkages on the rebuilt and old FMX transmissions. Upon closer inspection, the linkage on the rebuilt transmission has been welded and modified. I assume to make it fitthe 65 mustang. I would like to transfer the linkage from the old greasy transmission to the rebuilt one. I've done plenty of engine rebuilds and worked as a machinist for 15 years, but have never done more than change the fluid and filter on an automatic transmission. It's obvious to me that the linkage shaft must be retained internally somehow since there is nothing external. I don't have a problem with dropping the pan if the swap is pretty easy, but I don't really want to disassemble the whole transmission to do it either. Please help if you know how the linkage shaft is retained.

The selector shaft can be removed from inside the transmission. I posted a similar question a few weeks ago and someone posted a page from a shop manual of some sort that detailed the procedure. It turned out that I didn't need the info.
