What did I do wrong?

What did I do wrong?
As some of you already know, I recently removed my intake manifold in order to repair a slipped front gasket. Here is what I did, step by step:
1. Removed the carb.
2. Removed the distributor.
3. Emptied the radiator.
4. Removed the intake manifold.
5. Removed the valve covers (installed new ones).
I installed my new intake manifold gasket and used RTV to seal the front and rear (Edlebrock says not to use the stock cork gaskets).
I put everything back together in reverse order and now my engine is making this weird a$$ grinding noise. I have no clue as to how this happened, but it's happening. Engine kicks right over but there is definitely something going on that shouldn't be. I thought at first maybe the water pump went bad but I disconnected it and the noise is still there (only ran it for 30 - 45 seconds).
Any hints, tips, or suggestions out there? My buddy and I are going to wrench on it this weekend, but I thought I would seek some assistance from the pros. A.K.A. you guys.
This is a bummer because this engine ran better before I "fixed" it.

Pull and re-install your distributor San Jose..... even if you are sure it is right.
Look the gear over while you have it out.

inspect the distributor drive gear...and when you dropped it in did the dizzy seat all the way??? if so..post a video of the noise....you didn't leave any sockets / tools in the intake valley did you??? I wouldn't think so but just had to ask

RE: What did I do wrong?
do you happen to be running a fan shroud? the room between the fan and the fan shroud is incredibly close. you might have hit the bottom of the fan shroud and kicked it up when you emptied the rad through the gussit

You guys are awesome, I will check and make sure that the distributor is mounted properly. I know I didn't leave any tools behind because I paid extra special attention to the valley when I was removing the little amount of anti-freeze that dropped in there (very minimal).
I'll pull it and check the gears, the noise seems like it is coming from that area, which is why I pulled the water pump belt. I thought it went back in properly because the dizzt screw went back on tight...
Thanks again everyone! And I will try to capture some audio.
