well, now that the engine (67 289) is out and such i'm going through it all and i'm stuck on the distributor. i know i want vacuum advance and something a little different then your typical "MSD" stuff, so i wanted to go with a Mallory distributor. I was looking at the Unilite 4755101 which has what i want, and will go with my ignitor 2 coil, but what's with the 3 wires hanging off the sides of most of them if all you have to do is hook it to a 12v negative?

also is it wiser to go with a HEI or not since it doesn't need an external coil?

also i don't want to go with something like a MSD box either so that is out of the question.

Comp 9000 is a better unit.

 

HEI distributors work great, thats what i would go with.the only thing with those is they are fkn huge. if you have a monte carlo bar it might not clear.

 

Go with a Crane electronic advance control unit, you set the timing curve with the turn of a dial. The vacuum and mechanical advance is controlled by a microprocessor inside the dizzy itself so there's no springs or diaphragms to wear out. Also, you should really consider an ignition box like an MSD, or a Crane. The Crane Hi-6 works well and is affordable, and the electronic controlled distributors are pretty much the same price as a regular dizzy is(the MSD e curve is expensive though, but the Crane is affordable). The ignition box will help a good deal with mileage and low rpm power.

 

I am a fan of the HEI as well... Totally self contained, very reliable,and cheap repair parts are available in stockat every respectable parts store in America.

I despise the idea of waiting on mail order parts to get a brokencar running again.

We are running the Mallory HEI setup, good and cheap..

 

This what I just bought but I haven't got my engine running yet. If you go with the HEI make sure your air cleaner is not going to get in the way. Also, The water outlet for the heating systemin the manifold may be a bit close to the distribuor body.
