Default Need Driving tips ..... 66 stang

Sorry for the newb question. But I have to ask for driving tips on how to drive a carborated car. My bro has a 1966 mustang and it has a 289 with a cam, and new headers and a 4 barrell carb. When he let me borrow it last night it would die on me every time I came to a stop!!! I have been driving stick since I have been able to drive but they all have been EFI (Fuel injected). If any of you have tips for me on how not to kill it every time I stop that would be great. Thanks for any tips. Do you think it could be the cam that causes it to die at idel? Thanks again and I look forward to hearing tips.

Let it warm up for 2-3 minutes before you drive it

Left foot uses the brake, right foot feathers the accellerator to keep the rpms above 700.

sounds to me like the choke is not working/ not being used or not properly adjusted.

What the temp outside? I have a mechanical choke and it takes 70% choke to start the car 50% to get proper idle to back out and then after about 100 yards 0% choke but its also between 50 and 70 degrees outside too.

You need to find out if the choke is mechanical or automatic. Take the air cleaner off and see if there is a shielded cable running from the firewall to the carb.

My car did that to me for the first time. It did it 3 times so on the third time i just put it in neutral and reved the engine. Then it worked fine after that.

Nice of him to let you borrow it. Tell your bro you aren't going to borrow his car again till he gets that fixed!

yeah, either something isnt set right, or its just not warmed up. they do take a while to warm. (five to ten minutes on a cold morning) can you call your brother up and ask for tips? did it die on him aswell?

Yeah, choke possibly or if it was warmed up, it's not tuned properly. What was the idle speed before it died? And what cam/intake/carb is on it, do you know?
