if they already butchered the dash, i wouldnt be so fussed about sticking a new unit in the same hole

under dash - prone to being hit by passenger knees, glove compart - takes up too much room.

I'd like to find a simple amp with a volume control just to plug an ipod into. dont care if no radio or cd...im thinking something you could hide under a seat with a remote control...probably a fantasy!

cool thanks Scott...there seems to be more and more solutions for electronics every day

but it may have to wait a while after the 408 fiasco

They sell a repair plate for the 64-66 in metal or plastic you'll need it.

Underdash's look kinda cheesey! Remind me of the old eight track players.

well my cd player is toast now thanks to a crappy wiring job, im thinking about getting a tape deck that matches the original and just putting it under the dash

It is way easier then you think. If you add a standard aftermarket amp with an RCA to headphone jack cable you can easily use an ipod as the signal wire and power the speakers with the amp. Just set your gain on the amp conservitivly and use the ipod volume as a volume ****.

When my old HU was in for service I used a diskman (before everyone had MP3 players) and it worked great for a month.

If you just have rear package tray speakers just get something like this...

... it will more then likely sound better then your stereo through the HU you have anyway.
