gas tank cleaning?
If you are cleaning the outside of it, you may as well clean the inside. I would remove the gas tank, then fill it with a bottle of tolulene. Let that sit in the tank for a full day. Shake it around in the tank. Tolulene is basically carb cleaner. It will remove any fuel deposits. Then just hose out the tank. That is what I did on my corvette. The tank looked like brand new in the end.
i want to paint the outside of the tank the same color to match the car puwter grey. there is no rust (not that i know of). id like to just buy a new one but in the middle of a resto im straped for cash (saving for new leaf springs). biggest thing is i want to make sure if i do accidently throw a spark on it, it wont blow up.
I've done work on open fuel tanks many times before and have always removed the tank, stuck a garden hose in it an let the water run for at least a day before doing any work on it. This will completely inert the tank of any liquid fuel and fumes (its not the liquid you have to worry about, its the fumes). Then your ready to go to town and pretty much do what you want in safety. The aircraft stripper will clean the outer surface of the tank but even cheap Wal-Mart striper will do this. Get some of those green scrubbing pads(scotch-brite) and scrub the tank after the stripper has been on for about 5 minutes....wash down with water and a good cleaner (Simply Green) and your ready to prime and paint.
I would not buy a new tank unless the one you have is leaking or rusted extremely bad. I swear that tolulene will do the trick for the inside of the tank. You won't believe how much crap will come out.
