Gas Tank swap
Has anyone swapped a larger tank into a 67? I remember reading somewhere a 69-70 tank fits a 67, and will give a couple of extra gallons. Since I am getting ready to finish off the trunk, it seems like a good time to do it.
If you have done it, how hard was it to do? It looks like a tank replacement is fairly easy in general, but I am guessing the filler neck needs some kind of work with a taller tank. How much taller is the new tank? As long as it does not stick up higher than the frame around the tank, I would be very happy with it.
Thanks
Kevin

I have a 70 tank for my 68 (didn't put it in yet) but IIRC you have to cut a little off the filler neck and tweak the opening in the tank where the neck attaches (the article I saw used a broom handle). You also have to get the sender appropriate for the tank (a 70 in my case).
All in all looked like an easy way to get extra fuel capacity.

I have a '69 tank (20 gallon) in my '65. As stated, you can also use a '70 tank (22 gallon) for even more capacity. Your filler neck will need a bit tweaking, but I've heard that the connection at the tank is not that sturdy so you shouldn't try to pry it to a different angle.
Right now, I cut the filler tube and used an extra rubber hose section to get the angle right. I think I'll probably end up buying a new filler neck, cutting the proper angle into it and welding it back up.
Good luck!

Hi Guys I just replaced the tank in my 67 with the 70 tank and have had nightmares making the filler neck fit, but now I understand what you mean by "tweeking tank" I need to shorten the filler neck and pry the small neck on the tank to line it up with the filler neck...........OF COURSE......thanks guys, the only problem now it getting all the hair I pulled out to grow back again! Cheers Paull
