I have about 1000-2000$ to spend and my goal is eventually 400hp naturally aspirated. What should I do to first? Its a 302 from a 67. Site and exact part would be great if possible.

Take your budget go to vegas don't come back till you win.

Heads? Cam? Intake? Carb? Brakes? Suspension? Steering? Tires? Cooling? Rear? Trans?
It takes alot to make 400hp.

I would spec out the whole system first, then I would build the suspension and the brakes. Then I would save till I can build the motor and not peice meal it together. Then I would upgrade the drivetrain (trans/rear) since it will prob get ripped about quickly by an upgraded power plant.

 

Sorry dude, you're not getting 400hp NAout of $2k. If you do all the work you may be able to rustle up 300hp out of it, but that's stretching it.

Figure you'd need to spend $1200 on heads, $180 on a decent cam/lifter kit, $600-800 on a rebuild kit,a good $1k more on hardware andmachine shop labor, plusanother $500 at least on random extra crap that you won't forsee,and you're waaaaay over budget.

Have youthought about how you're going to stop all that power? Factory drums aren't going to do the job very well, and the factory suspension is going to make for one scary ride.

 

Ya, there is no way you can nearly that much power for that little money.

 

This is an easy 20 ponies right here just depends on how much you feed the critter not sure on the lifespan of the part thought doesnt come with a warranty

+10,000 on not getting anywhere near 400hp for only 2 grand.

You'll end up spending at least 2 grand just on brakes, suspension and some minor drivetrain stuff that's needed to cope with 400hp. And you won't even get the parts you need for 400hp with $2,000, and that's not even getting into labor and machining. The 302 I built has somewhere in the neighborhood of 370-390hp and I spend like $5,000 all told on it, parts and machining, and did the labor myself. A lot of it though was stuff I already had that I bought way before, like intake, all of my igition, my exhaust etc. I haven't seen a crate engine advertised anywhere that's similar to mine for under $7,000. And you'll need good internals for 400hp, cuz it sure as hell ain't gonna do with with just ARP rod bolt upgrades. If you want it to last, you'll need better rods than stock and good pistons, otherwise you're asking for trouble. Then you'll have to get it tuned if you can't tune it yourself. All told in order to build a RELIABLE 400hp car, having someone else do most of the work, you're looking at closer to $10,000 than $2,000.

 

I agree, you will never see 400hp NA with 2K. If you change your mind try some of this You can use it on your car or at parties.

hey guys he was asking what is the first step to getting 400 hp. Dodgestang is dead on with what he said. For me i think the first thing you should do is get the car ready for 400hp. brakes, then suspension.
